We invite
you to experience the work of Maui artist Philip Sabado. These paintings
channel history and culture through the medium of oil paintings through
the artist hand.
His early art education began where he was raised on the island of
Molokai. As the youngest of nine children, his mother always put aside
enough money for colors and paper for the young artist.
After serving in the army he returned to Honolulu to attend The Honolulu
Academy of Art. In 1976 he chose to study art comprehensively in California
and attended the prestigious Art Center College of Design as well
as the Otis Parsons Institute of Design, both in Los Angeles.
In 1980 he was selected as a member of the presgious Los Angeles Society
of Illustrators. He was also selected as well as one of the top fifty
illustrators in the United States and was chosen to study at Columbia
University in Paris.
On Maui, the Iao Valley State Park signs were created by Sabado in
1999. The year 2000 Sabado returned to his boyhood home, to Molokai,
to create a forty foot mural for the library at Kaunakakai School.
This was painted for the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the
Arts. This mural encompassed nine hundred year history of Molokai.
In August 2001 he completed a mural for the Hilton corporation in
Honolulu that will grace the entrance to their exclusive Spa. Three
original paintings were sold to the Hilton for the private Alii Towers
Presidential suites. On all twenty floors of the Hilton Kalia towers
you will find prints of Sabado's original floral and hula paintings.
Sabado has completed numerous commissions for private investors as
well.
